The economic-stimulus bill added these groups of workers to 10 groupes that previously were coveres under the work opportunitytax credit. To take the businesses must file a certification request withstats work-force agencies by Aug. 17 for unemployed veterans and “disconnected youth” hired betweebn Jan. 1 and July 17, 2009. The IRS has publishedf a revised Form 8850 that employers must use to obtaijthis certification. The tax crediyt for hiring these two types of workers will continuethrough 2010.
To qualifyu as an unemployed veteran, the workedr must have been discharged from the militarg within five years of the day he or she is hirer and have received unemployment benefits for at least four week s during the year before thehiringh date. A “disconnected youth” is is age 16 to 24, lackws basic skills and has not been regularlyt employed orattending school.
